Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes
Every diabetes book claims to have the answer to the problem. There are literally thousands of these “generic” diabetes books, as I call them.
All of them give very similar advice, with the only major difference being that some books recommend a low-carb regimen, while others recommend a plant-based diet. Both diets work to “control” blood sugar.
All of these books recommend exercise, and most of them give a detailed exercise plan and recipes. Some of them mention some of the key nutrients involved in healthy blood sugar, and most of them give doses.
So if there is so much agreement among practitioners and researchers, why do still have GROWING diabetes rates? Is it just that people ignore it? I don’t think so. We regularly work with people who tried all of this stuff and it didn’t work. It didn’t work because this diet + exercise advice doesn’t cover all the factors causing metabolic syndrome. And adding a handful of nutrients isn’t good enough either.

Long story short, all of these books are inadequate. I pull tidbits out of each of them, but without a fundamental understanding of the issue, these books won’t fully fix the problem. Many people WILL benefit from these books, especially those who are doing everything wrong (junk food all the time, no exercise, bad sleep, no supplements, etc.) but there are tons of people who will get little or no benefit because they already live a mostly healthy lifestyle.
