This book isn’t exactly mandatory reading, but I enjoyed it.

The cover makes this book look older, but it’s fairly recent (2012). If you’re into animal factoids this book will probably have a lot of new interesting stuff.

There isn’t much of a story to the book, it’s a compendium of newish discoveries across the whole animal world.

Worth reading, but not necessary.
