Hypoglycemia: A Better Approach - Paavo Airola
This book was quite good.
Airola was once a very big figure in the alternative health world, but unfortunately few people follow his work now.
This book goes into many things contributing to low blood sugar, and I agree with almost all of it - much of it sounds exactly how we’d explain the problem today, yet this book is almost 50 years old.
Most interesting to me is the recommendation for a high *natural* carb diet, with frequent meals.
Back in the 70s, and still today, the usual recommendation for hypoglycemia is a high protein diet. Airola discusses the problems with this diet - symptoms often improve, but the person FEELS much worse. This is not a desirable outcome.
Debates about macronutrients are still fierce, and these days almost everyone is against carbs. But I agree with Airola - I am becoming more and more dissatisfied with high protein and high fat recommendations. Natural carbs work very well in general, and I believe the emphasis on protein in modern diets is unjustified.
I can’t go into the whole thing here. I recommend reading this book.
