Inside of a Dog - Alexandra Horowitz

This book was alright.

The book attempts to get us to see the world through the perspective of a dog, using what we know about their biology and behavior.

It was charming and mildly interesting. But I did expect something more than most of us already know. There were a few tidbits new to me but nothing groundbreaking.

The author is very reasonable, staying away from dramatic conclusions from dog experiments. This is a good trait but it also makes the book less entertaining than it could have been - for example, she left out all of the experiments about “dogs who know when their owners are coming home” and other parapsychology experiments, which I would say are by far the most interesting dog experiments ever. The author left the can of worms unopened.

There was a lot about how our ideas of dog behavior contradicts theories based on evolutionary perspective…I didn’t find much of this compelling.

Overall it was well-written and engaging. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t learn much from it.
