Mastering Diabetes - Neal Barnard

This book was alright.

They mainly recommend a vegan diet for alleviating insulin resistance long term. They make a good case, with several large studies backing them up.

But, this does NOT account for all the factors behind diabetes. The main diet debate that has been happening for decades is between low-carb diets and plant based diets. Both have quite good results in the short term, but plant-based seems better long term. But no diet can provide all the essential nutrients, including those directly involved in blood sugar.

Since this book is mostly about diet and exercise, it is incomplete. Following this diet and exercise regimen WILL help many people, especially those who are obese, but there are plenty of people who already eat a whole food diet (including vegan or keto or paleo), and who DO exercise, and still have blood sugar issues. Because no diet will fix all nutrient deficiencies.

There are other factors too and they were not thoroughly discussed in this book..I know a lot of people are confused about these different diet opinions. This book is decent for outlining the vegan argument and evidence for diabetes control. But since it leaves so much out I can’t really recommend it.
