Metamorphosis - Frank Ryan
I first read this ten years ago when it came out, and I have been thinking about it ever since.
This is one of the most fascinating and well written “alternative” science books of the 21st century.
It’s only alternative because the mysteries of metamorphosis pose huge challenges to the standard theory of evolution.
Since it poses such a strong challenge, this is I think the reason most people have never heard of this.
I know several marine scientists and biologists, and none of them had heard of this!
The source material is extremely technical and dense. I recently re-read this and was very impressed at just how well the author made the subject easy and enjoyable to read.
