The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - Mark Manson

I really enjoyed this book.

Though I love the “golden era” of self help and personal development, in the 1970s-80s, it was definitely too black and white. “Strive for success - no excuses!”

Success books were separated from happiness books, and if you read both genres you would likely be confused about what to do.

This book recognizes that a real strategy needs both in mind. This book is about how your personal attitude and values shape your life.

There are many books in this genre worth reading, and this is definitely one of them. Despite the crude language in the title, and in the text, Manson has a lot of wisdom stuffed in here. He did his homework and his opinions are highly relevant to anyone trying to improve themselves, or/and be happy in the 21st century.

People who don’t like swear words should not read it.

Strong 9/10.

After I posted this review to my Instagram @RyanAleckszander, some people told me that they thought I should have been harder on this book because it said a lot without truly backing it up. Mason clearly read a lot in the personal development genre, and many of the ideas he presented are familiar to me. But it is true that he hardly expanded on many of the ideas, did not include a bibliography, or a recommended reading section, and you do kind of have to take his word on these ideas.

To me, the self help genre doesn't need rigorous referencing like other genres, but I do believe he could have explained many ideas further. Nonetheless, this is a genre that anyone should read many books in, and come to their own conclusions, so you don't need to fully take Manson at his word.

I included this book in both the sales and happiness categories here because, to me sales really means learning to be genuine, and honestly promote what you believe in.
