The Diabetes Code - Jason Fung

Mixed feelings about this book.

If I didn’t know anything about diabetes, I would say WOW, this makes complete sense. How did everyone get it so wrong?!

But, there is a TON of contradictory information about which diets work best for diabetes. This book doesn’t mention the controversy.

The book essentially blames sugar and processed carbs for increasing blood sugar and organ fat. The way it is presented makes perfect sense, but again there is more to the story that is left out.

There wasn’t any mention of the many nutrients that are involved in blood sugar. Most diabetes books are about diets, and that’s why all of them fall short of a proper explanation. While eating low carb will get good results for most people, it definitely doesn’t work for everyone - because diets don’t fix all nutrient deficiencies.

There is actually equally compelling evidence that HIGH carb low fat plant based diets work better (long term) than the keto-type diet promoted here.

I have to give a thumbs down to this book, even though it was well written and actually enjoyable to read. Diet-based diabetes books will probably always get a thumbs down from me. I’ve worked with hundreds of diabetics and I know that no diet is 100% effective, and that fixing nutrient deficiencies is extremely effective regardless of what they eat.
